Mother sues Character.AI and Google after 14-year-old son dies by suicide
The lawsuit alleges Character.AI knew its product endangered minors and failed to act.
A Florida mother sues Character.AI, its cofounders, and Google on Oct. 23, alleging that the company’s AI-powered chatbots contributed to the suicide of her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III. The suit, filed in the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida by the Social Media Victims Law Center and the Tech Justice Law Project, claims that Sewell formed intense emotional attachments to role-playing AI characters, leading to a dependency that ultimately resulted in his death.
The complaint says Character.AI knew the design of its app was dangerous and would be harmful to a significant number of minors, and that it deliberately targeted underage kids. The legal claims include strict product liability, negligence, wrongful death, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

In May 2025, a federal district court partially denied Character.AI's motion to dismiss, allowing the case to move forward. The lawsuit, along with parallel federal and state investigations, catalyzed a wave of safety-focused regulation for AI companion platforms, including mandatory age-verification and advertising restrictions on emotional-bonding chatbots.
