GitHub Copilot adds Anthropic and Google models alongside OpenAI’s

GitHub Universe launches multi-model Copilot with Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Gemini 1.5 Pro, and OpenAI o1-preview, letting developers choose their AI engine.

GitHub Copilot is adding Anthropic and Google models alongside OpenAI’s. At GitHub Universe today, the company announced that developers can now choose from Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro, and OpenAI’s o1-preview and o1-mini as the engine behind their Copilot chat sessions.

Claude 3.5 Sonnet is rolling out progressively over the next week, with Gemini 1.5 Pro following in the coming weeks. OpenAI’s o1 models are available starting today. All three models come with different strengths: Claude for complex multi-step coding, Gemini for its two-million-token context window and multimodal input, and o1 for deeper reasoning about edge cases.

GitHub also showed an early preview of GitHub Spark, a new natural-language app builder aimed at letting anyone build micro apps with plain English prompts. The company is positioning both moves as steps toward its goal of reaching one billion developers.
