OpenAI launches $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro subscription with o1 reasoning model

The new tier offers unlimited access to OpenAI's full o1 model and a 'pro mode' that uses extra compute for harder questions, targeting power users at ten times the price of ChatGPT Plus.

OpenAI today announced ChatGPT Pro, a new subscription tier priced at $200 per month, giving users unlimited access to the company’s most advanced models, including the full release of its o1 reasoning model. The plan also includes a so-called ‘o1 pro mode’ that uses additional compute to produce better answers on difficult questions in areas like data science, programming, and case law analysis.

The upgraded o1 model, which exits preview status today, is faster, can process image uploads for multimodal reasoning, and reduces major errors by 34% compared to the preview version, according to OpenAI. However, it underperforms the preview on some benchmarks like MLE-Bench. The o1 model will also be available to existing ChatGPT Plus users, but without the pro mode’s extra compute.

ChatGPT Pro costs ten times the $20 monthly ChatGPT Plus plan, making it OpenAI’s priciest plan yet. OpenAI says the tier is aimed at power users who already push models to their limits in math, programming, and writing. The company also announced it will award free subscriptions to medical researchers and plans to expand access to other fields. The launch kicks off ‘12 Days of OpenAI,’ a series of daily announcements.

The 'who pays $200/mo for a chatbot' discourse faded as enterprise and power users adopted the tier. OpenAI later expanded o1 pro mode to API access and continued its '12 Days' campaign with additional product launches, though the premium pricing remained a polarizing topic in AI circles.
