Meta cuts about 600 roles across AI division, keeps hiring for superintelligence team
The reorg hits FAIR, AI product and infrastructure teams as Meta restructures its AI work under chief AI officer Alexandr Wang.

Meta is cutting about 600 roles from its AI team or superintelligence lab, according to a memo from chief AI officer Alexandr Wang. The layoffs hit the Fundamental AI Research unit, known as FAIR, along with AI product and infrastructure teams. Meta confirmed the Axios report is accurate.
The cuts come after a summer hiring spree in which Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and brought on CEO Alexandr Wang to lead its AI efforts. The company paused hiring months later and announced a restructuring focused on AI products and infrastructure. Meanwhile, its newly formed superintelligence team, TBD Lab, continues to hire.
In the memo, Wang writes that a smaller team means fewer conversations per decision and each person will be more load-bearing, with more scope and impact. Axios reports Meta will allow impacted employees to apply for other roles within the company.
FAIR has taken a backseat in recent months: its leader, Joelle Pineau, left earlier this year, and in August Wang said Meta would aim to integrate FAIR research into the larger model runs done by TBD Lab.
The record
In a memo to staff, Meta's chief AI officer argued that reducing team size means fewer conversations per decision and each remaining person will be more load-bearing with more scope and impact.
A Meta spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that Axios’s reporting is accurate. TechCrunch reports Meta says most impacted employees should be able to find another job within Meta.

FAIR's best-known figure followed: four weeks later, on November 19, 2025, Yann LeCun, FAIR's founding director and Meta's chief AI scientist, announced he was leaving after 12 years to start AMI Labs, a world-models startup headquartered in Paris.
