Amazon to cut 14,000 corporate roles, cites AI-driven restructuring

The e-commerce giant says it is removing layers and shifting resources to AI, offering most affected employees 90 days to find internal roles.

Amazon said on Tuesday it will eliminate approximately 14,000 corporate positions, its second-largest job cuts since it slashed 22,000 jobs in 2022, as it moves to reduce bureaucracy and invest more deeply in artificial intelligence. The cuts, announced by SVP of People Experience and Technology Beth Galetti in a memo to employees, affect roles across administrative, sales, and executive functions.

Galetti wrote that the restructuring is a continuation of efforts to operate more leanly, with fewer layers and more ownership. She said the company is offering most affected employees 90 days to find a new role internally, with recruiters prioritizing internal candidates, and will provide severance, outplacement services, and health benefits to those who leave. “This generation of AI is the most transformative technology we’ve seen since the Internet,” she wrote, adding that it is enabling companies to innovate faster and that Amazon needs to be organized more leanly to move as quickly as possible for our customers and business.

The move comes as Amazon continues heavy spending on AI infrastructure, including $55.6 billion in the first half of its current fiscal year, primarily for AWS. In June, CEO Andy Jassy told staff that generative AI and agents would reduce the corporate workforce over time. Reuters reported Monday that the company was considering up to 30,000 cuts.

In a memo to employees, Galetti said the cuts aim to make the company stronger by reducing bureaucracy and shifting resources to its biggest bets, and acknowledged that the decision would be questioned given Amazon's strong performance.

The 14,000 were a first phase: on January 28, 2026 Amazon confirmed 16,000 more corporate cuts, about 30,000 since October and the largest workforce reduction in its history. A week later it guided to roughly $200 billion of 2026 capital spending, predominantly for AWS.
